SFGate: No way will they ever forget / New Yorkers can’t let the memories go — ‘life before was a little more cheerful’

2006-09-08 04:00:00 PDT New York — They don’t want to forget or to be forgotten. With the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 just days away, New Yorkers seem determined to remember what happened and to make sure that everyone else does, too.

John Michelotti spent three years getting permits for a Flag of Honor exhibit for victims of Sept. 11 that opens this morning at Inwood Hill Park on the upper tip of Manhattan. “When you see a field with 3,000 flags, you say, ‘Holy Mackerel‘ and begin to understand,” he said. “I thought they should be remembered — not as numbers but as names.”
