Achim Heukemes will literally never forget what happened on Sept. 11, 2001 — the date, along with an American flag, is tattooed on one of his tanned biceps.

From left, Markus Schuh, Andrea Schmidt, Achim Heukemes and John Michelotti hold a flag commemorating the Sept. 11 attacks at the upper Riversville Road home of Schuh Thursday afternoon, May 5, 2011. Schuh and Schimdt will be acting as support staff for Heukemes who is planning to cross the American continent twice starting on June 25 by biking to San Diego and then by running back, finishing his race at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Michelotti is the founder of the Flag of Honor/Flag of Heroes Project, donating framed American flags with the names of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to the next of kin of the victims.
