SANTA CRUZ >> Fifteen years to the day after the deadliest attacks on U.S. soil since Pearl Harbor, veterans gathered on the sands of Twin Lakes State Beach in Santa Cruz to remember the victims and those otherwise affected by the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

As J.T. Bikul, a readjustment counseling specialist at the Santa Cruz County Vet Center, raised a Flag of Honor bearing the names of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, dozens stood at attention.
