What represents the September 11th event for you?

I was a rescue worker at the World Trade Center. Nothing in my life could have prepared me for what I had seen. I believe that September 11th should be set aside as a federal holiday, because these innocent people died in vain.

How have you been affected?

There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about that terrible day, and its always the little things that get me. It was a cool brisk Tuesday morning, people going about their business, and no one had a clue what was about to come. The aftermath was too much to take in, it was like an atomic bomb hit Lower Manhattan, what do you focus on first? I think about what I didn't do rather than what I did do. Its torture.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

No. Plain and simple. A survey was taken a while back and 60% of Americans couldn't even remember what year it happened in. That is why a Federal Holiday needs to be created.

I AM A WTC 1ST RESPONDER WHO LOST 16 FRIENDS THERE.

How have you been affected?

MY HEALTH IS FAILING BECAUSE OF THE DUST.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

WELL IF THE GOVERNMENT REFUSES TO DEAL WITH WHAT HAPPENED TO US RESPONDERS BECAUSE OF THE DUST, THEN THE NEXT TIME AN EVENT LIKE THIS HAPPENS, NOBODY WILL SHOW UP FOR FEAR OF ENDING UP LIKE US.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

I was at work with the radio on when the report came through that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Tower. We all thought, "How can someone hit that tower without seeing it first..were they BLIND?" We then realized, horribly how deliberate it was when the announcer screamed that the second tower had been hit.
Being that I was the only person with a radio in the building, my department became so swamped with personnel that I ended up having to give updates via the intercom. It was my saddest day to announce to everyone about the events unfolding at the Pentagon and again in Pennsylvania. The entire building was never so quiet, it was hard to believe that our business was even open. People were rushing home, many of our own neighbors were NYC firefighters and were on their way down to assist and subsequently lost thier lives trying to save lives in the twin towers.
The entire week had such a sad feeling of surrealism to it. But we all went through it. I cried when I saw on the TV all the signs being held up by everyday people that read things like, "NYC cops/firefighters..we love you...you are our heroes" "God bless America" and the likes. All this within hours of the collapse of the Twin Towers.

How have you been affected?

I have always loved this country. God first, then family and country is our family motto.

I thank every service person I see for their selfless act of protecting our nation.

People...freedom isnt free. It is won with the spilled blood of those not only protecting your very way of life but with the blood of the innocents who did nothing more than go to work one September morning.
September 11, 2001 should have been a wakeup call and rallying cry. Instead, far too many have hit the snooze button and the only cry you hear is not a rallying cry but a whining, wimpering, snivering cry of "why me?"

Far too many Americans have never understood the meaning of sacrifice.
If they even get a hint of sacrifice, they are crying foul, accusing everyone else of being unfair and that they are somehow being victimized and being discriminated against.

PLEASE! My family is American Indian. Dont even go there with that load of crap.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I doubt it. American are sadly like a five year old with an extrememly short attention span.

I remember Congress standing there singing "God bless America" on the steps of the Capital and thinking, "You bastards better NEVER forget this day" and here we are...8 years later...
Congress really only did that for a 'feel good' sound bite, and we are stupid enough to keep electing these people into office.
'in God we trust' is now being removed from our money as evidenced in the new dollar coin (what a joke)
Our very President is trying to subtly replace 9/11 day with a new "National Service Day" to promote volunteerism without any reference as to the events of 2001. I guess he found it too difficult to pick another day...ANY other day.
Congress constantly bitches and bickers as though our own safety was never compromised and breached. Gives us a 100$ tax credit when gas prices go over 3 dollars a gallon and think that THEY have control over a free market when they cant even control their OWN spending.

Why was anyone surprised when the first dozen or so of the new Presidents panel was picked..they has to abdicate the job due to poor accounting of their own personal finances.
We have replaced the memory of the events of September 11, 2001 with infighting over National Health Care and accusations of constant racism.
No longer are we allowed to EVER question those who WE elected into public office for fear of being called a racist or worst.
If we fight for the unborn we are accused being right wing nuts. (yeah, Im a nut cause I ACTUALLY want people to LIVE)
If we argue in favor of no more bailouts then we are accused of being 'unAmerican'.

Are you kidding me?!!!

We had better wake up fast America.

We are being sold...and sold out...FAST

I truly wonder what this country is coming to when freedom of speech is no longer free unless you agree with those who wish to hand it over to our enemies.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

I was in the Army serving in Korea. It was about 2400 hrs at the time I was trying to go to sleep. And my roomate was watching tv and thats when I heard the news I looked at the tv and saw it. I thought it was either a dream or some made for tv show at first but then I relized it was true. I felt alot of anger but I also wished I could be there to help but knew I could not because I was thousands of miles away. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life.

How have you been affected?

It has opened my eyes!

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I hope so I say this cause some people are so blind they dont even see whats right in front of them. God Bless the USA.

On September 11th I was working as a roofer. I thought that a pilot made an extremely stupid mistake crashing into the tower until I heard of the second plane.

I marched my patriotic All-American self to the nearest Army recruiter and enlisted so that I could go on over there and hand them there ass for performing such a cowardly act.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I believe that we came together as a nation, and need to continue to do so.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

I was enlisted in the Marine Corps at the time it happened, I was actually getting my haircut in the squadbay just minutes shy of going to watch the Silent Drill Team for the first time ever, then I heard the other Marines making quite the commotion and I looked up from getting my haircut and watched everything unfold infront of me, for a short time I didn't believe it was real like everyone else, I honestly thought it was a movie I watched a couple nights prior....unfortunately it was not a movie...

How have you been affected?

I wasn't personally affected by the traumatic loss on that September day, I know people that did lose loved ones at the time. But as Marines, when the call came for us to deploy and do our job overseas, we damn sure did; We were the first units to cross the Iraqi line and start the war; My particular unit was 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division based out of North Carolina; We were part of RCT I / II attached to II MEF and we will forever be known as Task Force Tarawa that secured An Nasiriyah in a six day battle of unconventional urban warfare against US forces.

This Christmas, my girlfriend and her family are all from Bethpage, Long Island and they lost a very close personal friend in the tower that day, he was on a ladder crew, I forget which one, but my girlfriend and I found the family friend of which they lost in the events, so on Christmas day, I'll be presenting the family with my personal Flag Of Heroes, as well as a card and the directions to find their dearly departed friend.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Yes, I would love to say that it will open up many eyes of the public, but after defending our country, and being treated the way I have been treated by Anti-War, Anti-Troop hell Anti-Everything...It saddens me to say that people still don't know who to pay respects to when they're due...and that saddens me tremendously beyond all recognition. Thank you for creating the flag and cherishing the people that lost their lives that day...
Happy Holidays to you and your loved one...

The Events of 9/11 have Affected Me by Standing-Up and Volunteering for Community Service More. Anytime I can Assemble People and Praise the Lord and Country - I Will. I have been in the US Air Force for Thirty Plus (30+) Years and Will Always Stand-Up and Be Counted. Our Past Leaders have Always Prayed to the Lord and for Our Great Country, but it seems that Most People Today have Pushed God and Country Out of Their Lives and Hearts. And You Wonder Why Our Children Act as They Do. No Morals, Integrity, or Character. I am Not Perfect and Do Not Claim to Be, But I Can and Will Do the Right Thing. I Firmly Believe in God, Santa Claus, and Our United States. I Try My Best Not to Complain as Much. Enjoying Life Serving Our Lord and Country.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

No!
Until the People around the World Stop Fussing and Fighting over Nothing - then the World’s People will be at Peace with One Another. Our Lord Looks Down on Us and Sadly Shakes his Head Remembering He Gave the World Jesus Christ, His only Son, to Pay for Our Sins. We Have Turned Our Backs on God and Country - Have We No Shame? All I Can Say is - the Way People Think and Believe - We are in Serious Trouble. No One Seems to Care about Anything, except What's in it for Me? Parents of Our Youth are Raising Their Own Grand-Children these days because Their Kids Sit on Their A__ and Blame Everyone Else for Their Mistakes. There is No Integrity or Character with Our Young People. I will say that I have met a few young folks that were making something of their lives and you know what? These Fine Young Men and Women are Serving Our Armed Forces of this Great Nation - America. My Hat is Off to All of Our Fighting Men and Women for Their Sacrifices Towards Freedom Against Terro!

What represents the September 11th event for you?

After the first plane crash I remember watching live coverage and seeing the second plane fly in. Until that time everyone wondered what happened at that instance we knew exactly. The coming together of strangers and the patriotism that was so evident then, but seems to have waned. To sum it up I guess it represents HOW SOON WE FORGET.

How have you been affected?

I lost a brother in law to a road side bomb in Baghad on June 30, 2005. If it wasn't personal before it became so then. My resolve is even stronger and if I were younger I would be back in the military and there as we speak in his honor. My brother in law died as he lived as a true patriot. He served in the National Guard and was a Sheriff's Deputy before the war. He was a Christian and not afraid of death and was doing what he truly believed he had to.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I am afraid for the worse. America is to busy fighting amongst ourselves to remember why we are there. WE WERE ATTACKED. We did not ask for the fight, it was brought to us. The world now sees us as a people who can't sgree and solve our own problems. I belive this will only serve to embolden others who hate us in the future. WE MUST UNITE or all we cherish may be lost.

That's what makes us strong.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

The US flag and American pride. I have the US flag everywhere! Tattoos, on cars, flag pole, and displayed all over my home. Our flag is an important symbol and should be respected. I am glad if you have pride for your heritage, as a decedant from Italy, Germany, and Hungary I am proud too. But when asked what nationality I am, I respond American. If you display another flag on your home or vehicle I can only hope that you have enough respect for the country in which you actually live and display the US flag also.

How have you been affected?

I am deeply sadened for the loss of so many Americans that were murdered and for those who fight for our country and die for us. It hurts to not see this country 100% together in standing behind these people and showing them the support that they deserve. The families of the victims and of those in our military deserve nothing less than our complete respect and admiration. Any American that does not show this should be removed from our soil. I am so sick of negative comments and anti-everything organizations degrading our citizens and country. My father has a photo from a parade where military members are marching by and the only one to stand up and show them respect was an ederly man in a wheelchair. Would you have stood up? I know I would have.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

The events of 9-11 changed the future for all mankind. I think it has proven to all countries that terrorism is a threat and acts can be carried out on anyones land at anytime. Larger acts of violence are not thoughts but reality. Unfortunately our countries policies and feelings get shadowed by political correctness. This political correctness that we exhibit to the world makes us appear afraid and only a bigger target. We as Americans cannnot be afraid and need to be able to point out the truths that surround us, not matter who they might offend or upset. We need to be strong and always, always, always put America FIRST!

I would hope that people never forget that day....it makes me sick to visit that hollowed ground and people are actually selling purses and books. This is holy ground; not a circus. America needs to realize that we are vulnerable to attack and not be so complacent as we were before 9/11. We need to band together and support this war against terrorism. Protect our shores from further attack. We cannot back down.

I find myself being less tolerant of people. I am more suspicious of things than I was before. I was looking forward to becoming a father, and don't get me wrong I'm still a very proud dad, but I know that the world my children grow up in will never be the same as I had. They will never know a world free from terrorism or it's threat, it saddens me and makes me angry.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Did WWI, WWII, Korea or Vietnam change the future of mankind? Of course they did, and so will 9/11. From now on every child in school will learn about terrorists and what they did that day. Every day people will live in fear that it could happen again, to them or someone they know and love. Every day one of our soldiers will pay the ultimate price fighting this evil, and every day a mother will lose a child to this cause. I do not see any end in sight for this fight and nor should there be so long as there are people out there willing to murder innocent civilians.

Emotionally only. I feel stronger about America and the diversity of people who live here.

I now see New York City as one of the most successful civilizations that there has ever been.
Our people are tolerant.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I am sure that civilization will continue to evolve, but it is clear that it must be led by us. The people of the world will follow at their own pace.

How thousands of people can be killed and there is nothing that we can do nothing about it other than hope for the best and hope that our troups are ok.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Yes because our freedom is afected and every one is to scared to get on the plane to see family or friends with out the thought of 911. We cant even let our children watch the news and here that there is a threat. So that they will be to scared to go to school or even live. it makes it were no one feal safe any were they go....

Not sure I understand the question - but whenever I see an American flag now it has a different affect on me - I feel more like I appreciate the flag and the right to wave it - and realize the privilege that is.

How have you been affected?

Civil liberties have been turned in for some sense of safety.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

It already has - everything is before or since 9/11 now. People, especially children, are no longer able to be innocent - every day every person in the world has to acknowledge there are bad people in the world and the rest of us have to accept a way of life that attempts to protect us.

It has really made me think a lot about humanity, wondering where this is ultimately leading us to. 9/11 has given "UNITED" States a whole meaning to me, but most of all, I can never ever forget the images of death, destruction, and sheer terror that followed the attacks.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Not for all man kind, because I don't believe that this can have the same effect on all nations. Certainly in our country it will. Unfortunately though, the cost of protecting the U.S.A. from future attacks, in my opinion, could possibly bankrupt our federal government.

I believe it already has changed the future of the United States. However, I just don't know if it has sent us in the right direction. While terrorism must be fought, we can't just run rampant through the world. We have to focus on our policies and how to protect ourselves by closing our doors and not allowing everyone in blindly. That way, we can focus on who already slipped in.

IA Native New Yorker Speaks - A Different Perspective

Like everyone else my Wife and I were profoundly affected by the horrific tragedy in New York and Washington this past week. I would like to offer a different perspective on these events. My following comments should not be construed to be a diminution of those who lost their lives or the suffering of their relatives or close friends.
Cindy and I are native New Yorkers, who for the past eleven years have been fortunate to live in the Third Lake-Grayslake community. While living in or visiting the New York metro area, the twin towers are ever present Although located at the foot of Manhattan they can be seen for over fifty miles if a clear view is available. – They could be seen in television panoramas from Meadowlands stadium in New Jersey, from the Tappan Zee Bridge in Westchester county, from areas along the Connecticut and Long Island shorelines. This is similar to viewing the tips of the Sears and Hancock buildings from Illinois Beach State Park. Like the Sears Tower, the Hancock Building, Soldier Field, the Water Tower they were symbols of New York City. But they were more. Because of their proximity to Lady Liberty and Ellis Island, the twin towers were truly symbols of America. Years ago when travelers arrived in New York Harbor by ship they were greeted to New York and the United States by the Statue of Liberty. Up until last Tuesday, the first view of our Country by airline passengers arriving in the New York metro airports from Europe were the World Trade Center Towers. Because of the sheer size and prominence in the New York skyline, they were used by these travelers as signposts to Lady Liberty.
The New York skyline has been changed forever. America has been changed forever. A symbol of our freedom and prosperity has been eradicated. I have read that the World Trade Center will be rebuilt. Such an action will serve as a fitting monument to those innocent victims and their rescuers who lost their lives that infamous day!
A personal note, during the years 1975 through 1979 I worked in Tower 2 (the South Tower). My employer, Insurance Services Office, was an original tenant of the nineteenth and twentieth floors. Through my window, I watched Building 5 being constructed. The images on television fail to portray the proximity of the structures in the World Trade Center complex, or the size of the towers from ground level. It is difficult for me to image how the shattered 110 floors of each tower can fit into the concourse. Although, luckily, no family members or close associates were affected by the calamity, I feel a deep loss as a former New Yorker and an American.
After the events of September 11, Cindy reminded me of a paperweight I had in the bookshelf. While working at the Trade Center, office expansion of our floors was occurring. To supply offices and cubicles with power and communication, holes were bored into the floor to access the conduit containing electrical and telephone lines. Some of the employees picked up the resultant cores and used them as paperweights.
I realized that I held in my hands a piece of the Tower which I had just seen crashing to the ground on live TV!!
Before Friday’s (9/14/01)candlelight vigil in Grayslake, I contacted Bruce Peterson who organized the activity and related my story to him. I offered the use of the paperweight during the ceremony to “bring closer to home” a tangible symbol of this tragedy.
This Monday (9/17/01), as a Trustee, I will bring this paperweight to the regularly scheduled Third Lake Village Board Meeting, relate its meaning and call for a moment of silence to mourn all that was lost last Tuesday.
May God Bless America!

Jim Rogers
Third Lake, IL
9/15/01

The above was written on 9/15/01 and appeared in local Grayslake weekly newspapers. It was also read and entered into the official minutes of the Village of Third Lake Board Meeting on 9/17/01. A copy was also displayed in the Grayslake Public Library along with photos of the WTC, newspapers and magazines recording the events, and the “paperweight core”. A photograph of the candlelight ceremony held in Grayslake on 9/14/01 was featured in the 9/24/01 issue of TIME Magazine and was used again on the title page of the TIME ANNUAL 2001. In the year since, my Wife and I visited “Ground Zero” during our annual Christmas visit to family and friends in New York. It was a shock to exit the Bowling Green subway station at the foot of Manhattan and seeing a red crane with an American flag in place of the gleaming silver monoliths of the Trade Center. The sight of a Christmas tree decorated with paper angels representing the victims standing amidst the rubble, and the personal shr!
ines surrounding the site were poignant reminders of the loss of life which had occurred. As we approach the one year anniversary, we must not become complacent and forget the first attack on the continental U.S. since the British invaded Washington DC and burned the White House during the War of 1812!

Written prior to 9/02

On 9/30/02 Cindy and I visited the crash site of United Flight 93 in Shanksville PA. We have since returned to "Ground Zero" in December 2003. The WTC Core has been on display at the 1st Anniversary Candlelight Service in Grayslake, during the 2nd Anniversary in the Lake County Courthouse, and at St. Gilbert Church on 9/11-12/04.

How have you been affected?

Since 9/11/01 I have spoken at various functions exhorting the audience not to forget the events of the day.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Yes, we are reminded that oceans are not a defense to those who wish us harm. Our Nation with its traditions of freedom and liberty is unfortunately hated by many in this world who do not wish the light of freedom to shine.

The Sep.11th events represent the loss of innocence of this great country. We were never exposed to military men walking our streets with machine guns.We lived in total safety. And that was stolen from us,we have been raped by people who hate our freedoms and liberties. But we as a people,as a nation of relentless heroes who fight for freedom and liberty will always prevail!!We won the war for freedom from England,we won the war aginst slavery and we will win the war against these, our enemies of liberty and freedom. We the people are a powerful nation under God,and it is He who will give us the victory!!.

How have you been affected?

On Sep. 11,I lost my cousin,Ana Mercedes Centeno. She worked at the "Twin Towers" That's what we called them when we were little.
She was never recovered, just her car.I hadn't seen Mel(as we lovingly called her)for about 20 yrs.I moved to Florida and lost touch.Nevertheless she was family and she was loved.
Also the World Trade Center was part of our backyard scenery.I had my first kiss there. That was my meeting place for my husband. If we were still living in NY we would of probably been at the WTC that fatal day.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Unfortunately we will never feel completely safe again. Not in a plane, not in a subway and not even in a highriser.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

No one who was alive that day will be unaffected by the attacks. I suspect that there will be a ripple-down effect upon the next century or two as well. However, assaults upon humanity have been all too common throughout history. At some point, the horror of this attrocity, too, will subside from the nation's collective nerve endings. If we are to make some good come of this terrible day, we must do so now, vigorously, in our own time, while the wound is fresh and the impetus to fight evil is compelling.

I lost one of my children in the attack - Catherine Patricia Salter.
She was 37 years old and had just moved to New York City late December of 2000. She had received a promotion with her company Aon. Today is March 3, 2005 and I just received the last cremains. This is the second time that I received cremains of Catherine. I do not know how the people who have received nothing can accept not having anything of their loved ones.
When Catherine died a void was left in my world. No one can take her place in my heart.

How have you been affected?

My loss is one that will never go away and is never diminished no matter how much time goes by.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

The terror attack should have shown the people of the United States that we are not unapproachable. They proved in a deadly way that this country's security can be breached and will in all probablity be done so again.
The people of the United States have got to realize that we are responsible for our own safety.
We cannot complain about a long line in the airport or the searches that we go thru. I also have a daughter who is also an airline attendant and she tells me that they are still the first line of defense on a plane but that they are not allowed to carry any defensive weapons.
The Home Land Security is doing what has to be done - but sometimes they over look the obvious places for security.

Both as a responder and a person who lost his best friend, 9-11 represents both the worst and the best of humanity. I saw unparalled compassion in a city known for its cold uncaring attitude. I also saw what one faction of society can do to thousands of innocent people. The actions of the heroes of that day will be in my memory for the rest of my life. And my memories of Dan,David and Ron will always inspire me to be the best that I can possibly be.

I'm not sure. People forget so quickly unless they have some sort of personal involvement. Now it seems for others that it's "just another day at the office". I hope and pray that we don't become so in senitive that we forget the deeds of the firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel that gave their lives that horrible day.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

I'm not sure I understand this question. I was at work when it happend and we were told to go home. I watched the television until I couldn't bear to watch any more. I think we had all been taking our freedom for granted and now we need to be more careful about who we can trust. But, it also pulled us together as a country. I have never seen so many flags flying before. I think about all the people that died that day and what their families must be going through. I can understand a little because my husband was killed by a truck driver who went to sleep and veered off the road and killed my husband and one of his friends. It is very difficult to go on but you do especially if you have children and I have two.

How have you been affected?

I've see pictures before of wars, but this was happening right before us on the television. I have more respect for our service people, all branches. When I see a soldier now I go up to him or her and tell them how much I appreciate what they are doing. They are putting their lives in harms way so that we can still enjoy our freedoms. I think everyone, whether they agree with the war or not, should let the soldiers know how much we appreciate what they are doing. I don't think enough people do that. I just spoke with a Navy recruiter last week. We were both getting sodas at a store and I was still in his way. I said excuse me but then I saw his uniform and told him how much I appreciated what he was doing for us and our country. He said that was nice to hear because he gets a lot of negative responses in his job. I pray for all soldiers for their safety in the war and also those that are there but not fighting but are there providing services to the soldiers. I also pray for their families that are waiting for them to come home. I think we all need to pray more now. Prayer has been taken out of schools and I think it should go back. Everyone can pray to whoever their God is and those that say there isn't any God don't have to pray. It's our right to choice who we pray to. I hope we don't let a few people take God out of everything. We are living in troubled times and need our God.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Yes, I do. There has always been fighting and there will always be fighting until God says, enough, and sends Jesus Christ back to take us home to Heaven. Maybe it will change some peoples'minds about fighting, but I'm not sure that will be the case. God said there will be wars and rumors of wars and here we are still fighting.

The realization that there are people so distorted in their thinking and views of the creator, that they could justify in thier own minds the sensless slaughtering of innocent people.

How have you been affected?

I have been affected in too many ways to name. The first is a seething hate that rejoices when I hear about a terrorist dying, followed immediatley by the gut wrench of what they did "Those Bastards" runs thru my mind, at every mention of Sept 11. Un-wavering support for our country's position of finding and destroying terrorist cells anywhere on the planet. I used to believe that maybe the world opinion of us as acting as a cop for the planet was true. But now I know that it is only now coming true, and that the planet needs a cop, the world is becoming a neighborhood, and we need a cop on the street coner to keep the hoodlums out.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Oh Yes the future is changed. America will no longer respect borders of nations that harbor people who kill innocents, and the nations of the world now know this. We are justified in being proactive in these matters, and the world will learn that if they want their borders respected, they neet to play by the new set of rules. A global community is building, and the threats to everyone from a small petty dictator cannot be ignored. America will drag the rest of the planet kicking and screaming into the 21st century and beyond. American ideals will win the day, not just for America, but for the rest of the world as well.

I do think we need to start letting people get on with their lifes and learn that we can learn from the past and go on. WE will never know how much anyone know, just go on and try to be more prepared.

How have you been affected?

I did not lose anyone on that horrible day but I feel tremendous grief.I have decided to dedicate my life to achieving payback for the families that lost someone one that infamous day. i have decided to leave my stable life as a salesman to become a soldier in the Army. I came on this website to buy hero flags to modivate me during life in the army. When i feel like giving up I intend to look at the names who lost their lives to keep me going strong. I will take these flags with me to boot camp and wherever the war on terror takes me to remind me why I am making this sacrifice to my family and to seek stability again for this counrty that I love. I understand the task at hand and I know no matter what I do I can never bring those brave people back but hopefully i can do something to prevent it from happening again. God bless those we lost and God bless America..

What represents the September 11th event for you?

The events of 09-11 brought out an evil that I thought I would never see in my life time. As a firefighter, I sat in front of the TV stunned as I watched both towers come down. I knew that many civilians and firefighters just died in front of me. The hatred I felt for the unknown persons who did this is a hatred I hope I never feel again.

How have you been affected?

It puts things into a whole new perspective. I have come to realize that evil has a stronger presence than it should have. I wonder what the thought process is for people who live to kill like they did that day. Also, some of the names on your Heroes flag, I can put a face to. Though they were not close freinds, they were brothers and sisters that I knew from various firefighter conferences and conventions. I have received the Heroes flag for Christmas. It will be framed and hung in my house to honor those whose names are on it. I aslo plan to by 1 of each and donate them to our city hall and fire department.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

The sad thing is that it will change some, but evil will always try to be triumphant. The main thing is to never forget what happened on that day. To never forget and to march on unwaivering is the only way to show those who are evil that we might get knocked down, but we will get back up. When we get back up, they should know that they have pissed off the wrong people and may God have mercy on their souls!

A small flag that I placed on the antena of our ambulance our first day back on shift. When it became worn I took it down and folded it. I place it in the pocket of my uniform every day and I always will.

How have you been affected?

I never leave for work without kissing my Wife and telling her I Love her. I call her durring the day just to say hello. And it's different now when I walk into the Firehouse. I never thought it could, but it means even more to me to do what we do. And, when your relief comes in telling saying have a safe shift doesn't seem like just another line.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I really don't think it will change mankind. many have already forgotten what was lost and what was given that day. Most would deny it, but from the big red truck or the little blue car you see things as they really are.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

The feeling of helplessness. My daughter was in NYU, her dorm just 4 blocks from the WTC and I live in Kansas City, Missouri. I was on the phone with her telling her what was happening as her room faced the Brooklyn Bridge when the South Tower collapsed and the phones went dead.
I didn't lose anyone that day, but for 45 minutes, I didn't know that. I will never forget that feeling, and sympathize with those who didn't get a second phone call, saying their loved ones were all right.

How have you been affected?

Not as tolerant of what some refer to as "Freedom Fighters." I see them as nothing more than uneducated backward followers of murderous deceitful power-hungry leaders. Not for one minute do I think that the likes of Bin Laden or Arafat actions have anything to do with anything other than extending their fame, power and glory.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Less trust, less tolerance. More red tape and proceedures. In otherwords, the Terrorist did accomplish one thing and that no one likes them and they made us feel less safe.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

A free and true America - a single American flag blowing in the breeze.

How have you been affected?

I was born and raised in Staten Island and saw the twin towers being built and then had the pleasure to be able to work at 1 WTC. I lost three friends in the disaster and still cannot look at the pictures of that horrible day - the pain is still very heavy in my heart and soul. They stole a part of my past and stole a part of our children's future but they can never steal American's hopes and dreams.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

It already has changed our past and will affect our future for generations to come. They attacked with the same stealth and cowardice as the Japanese did at Pearl Harbor and, as Americans, we cannot let the memory of those who died in vain be lost or forgotten. The changes are clear and we must maintain a strong presence in countries that will threaten our freedoms as Americans.

Whenever I see an American flag, I think about that infamous day. I will always remember where I was when I heard the news. I was out on our high school marching field preparing for our halftime show that Friday night. Our band director came over and told us that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon. All day long televisions in the school were on CNN.

How have you been affected?

I'm more alert of what's going on around me now. I have also learned that you need to cherish life. I am pretty far from New York (Texas), but I know that tragedies can happen anywhere, even in the small town I live in.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I think America, as a whole, has changed. People have become friendlier to strangers and are now eager to lend a helping hand. This event has brought other countries closer to us, but some have been pushed further away. With time, I do believe mankind will be changed for the good.

As a firefighter, I have been dealt a lot of guilt because I could do nothing. As firefighters, we solve problems. House on fire? Call the Firemen. Kid choking on a piece of candy? Call the firemen. 17 Year old and daddy's new sports car wrapped around a telephone pole? Call the Firemen. Jet hits a 100 story building? Call the Firemen. They can fix it. To fix it, we go to the root of the problem. This time the problem was much bigger than those guys could realize.

No. Society today has a "What have you done for me lately" mindset. Given enough time, they will forget or be desensitized to the events that changed my career forever.

My sister Alison Wildman who was on the 92nd floor of the Tower 1. Alison did not come home on September 11, she died at 10:29 AM. Alison was only 30 years old.

How have you been affected?

Anger and hate. Those were two words that never were part of my life before 9/11. Now they are part of my daily life. I sat with my parents on 9/11 and watched Tower 1 fall knowing my sister was still in there and we could do nothing to help her. Then the trips to NY to try and find her because we would not give up hope that she got out.
People who were not there cannot comprehend the unbelievable saddness.
Thousands of people looking for their loved ones. Hoping and praying they would be listed in a hospital book, and than not finding their name. Giving DNA samples in hopes they would be identified.
Than being notified on Alison's 31st birthday a small fragment was identified. This is what my family lives with everyday.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Everyday there is change. Life will never be like it was. Now we live with colored alerts, soliders in the streets and airports. Children growing up knowing their parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles were murdered by terrorists just by going to work one day. A religion that preached of peace showed it is a religion that teaches evil.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

Reassertion of the flag and of what it means. We need to show more often that when we are faced with such acts that we band together as one. And those who are not of the race and creed should leave this country if they can't stand up for it in the name of honor.

How have you been affected?

Not with the loss of any one person, no. However as the belief in our country and its people, yes. We started to show unity once again. And we should learn that from this act we should not let fear run our lives. We,are after, the strongest nation and we need to re iterate that with all in question as to our strength.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

That remains to be seen. If we can get people to turn away from the greed as to what they want to be reimbursed for their losses, and look the the side of defending our country, then there may be hope. I agree that we should never have lost one life, however there is reality. But everyone on those people were old enough to know that you have lif insurance to take care of you loved ones should you all of a sudden not be there for them. What makes them think they deserve to be taken care of for the rest of their life. War veterans don't even get that. We don't see them in law suits to collect hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars. They should not be allowed to proffit over and above the insurance claim, unless of course it is the funeral expenses that they are faced with. But then again how few was that, most of those people became dust.I know there was a great loss and I don't want to minimalize that but to pay for this forever is a joke. All of the contributio!
ns and donations they received should have taken care of all incurred expenses, except we had to pay people from those donations ,so the ones whom it was directed to was not the greater benefactor.Greed enters everywhere, another example is the woman suing the government because her husband died of the anthrax, please as a government paid postal carrier he had great benefits and why should she be awarded 50 million she didn't live that well when he was supporting her alive. There must be a line drawn somewhere.Greed will be our demise if we aren't careful.

The thing that most sticks out in my mind is the amount of courage and patriotism the people of NYC and the rest of the country diplayed after those cowardly acts of terrorism on 9/11. What represents the September 11th event for you?

There are NO WORDS powerful enough to represent the amount of hatred, devastation, loss and destruction that those events caused counless souls in the Universe.

We need Hope, Love and Teamwork to survive in the future...not for our lives but for those of our CHILDREN!

How have you been affected?

I think it is better to focus more on those lives spared, those souls who cheated death, who survived, who still have their families to go home to at night, who fought against tough odds by willing themselves to build courage, hope and faith.

My friend was one of those people. His name is KAZUHIRO GROVER. You will not find his name on any list of 9-11 victims. He climbed down from the 80th floor of the second tower when the first one was hit on the same floor. It took him a half an hour....one that I am sure felt like an eternity when you think about everyone trying to escape. He walked out and soon...the towers fell.

He is a beacon of Hope for others and so are countless others just like him.

We can mourn, and cry, and ask ourselves "How could this happen to us!?", but I think it is healthier to think about those like KAZ and thousands like him.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

Do onto others as you would have done onto yourself. Simple words. Big meaning.

Almost noone does this simple act of kindness. I have to try to remember to do this at times. Hatred is easy to spread. It is like a disease. Just as there are terrible diseases...there are also amazing cures.

HATE = CANCER

Love is the cure. Connecting to people and really understanding what they are going through and who they are. We have to listen more, talk less. We must think before we act. We must love unconditionally!

Only then, will terrorism, hate and destruction be powerless over us.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

There are so many things that conjure up the images I saw in New York City on 9/11. First, the sounds of jet engines and sirens are forever burned in my memory-- I jump at the sound of them to this day. I also can't get out of my head the amount of confused, scared and hurt people wandering around Manhattan. But now its so much more. People standing together, united, that's what represents 9/11 to me. Tangibly, the photo of the three NY firemen lifting the flag is the clearest image of that day. As time goes on, NY firefighters have also come not to represent that awful day, but the good in the world and the love we should all have for each other.

How have you been affected?

We have all been affected. I was in NYC that day and had to see firsthand the devastation and pain that people had to endure... there are no words. Like many others, I realized how short life is and that there are no guarantees of a tomorrow. I also realized how important it is to tell your friends and family how much they mean to you and to cherish every part of every day. Mostly, I am so pleasantly shocked by the outpouring of emotion, love and compassion that was shown in NY and all over the world on September 11 and beyond. I think that I am most pleased at how people have finally come to realize who the real heroes are-- not Hollywood actresses or All-star athletes, but our mothers, fathers and friends. The police and fireman of NY risked their life without thought to try and help people they never met-- and many never even saw a face. That to me is the ultimate expression of humanity, and what I hope is the lesson learned for years to come.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I think it has already changed the future, although I am not sure how yet. I believe we are at a dangerous crossroads and the choices we make as a people now will have infinite repercussions for generations to come. How we choose to handle this crisis and react to these evil terrorists will ultimately decide the fate of the world. I believe one way we will head down a destructive path that will lead to a dark and dreary world... one where there is no turning back. I also believe that if we choose wisely and make the right choices we can set this world back on a path of good and righteousness, for the whole world. What we need to realize now is that this isn't about America anymore or NY in general-- this is about affecting global change. Without it, I fear 9/11 is just the beginning.

I knew several people that died at the WTC that the terrorist attacked. It was definitely an attack on American's personally and on our country.

How have you been affected?

Yes, I have. My niece's husband lost his aunt who worked at one of the towers. Two of my girlfriends lost their oldest sons. Other friends have lost their sons and sisters and other family members.I have also lost friends and my community have lost many of it's members.
I have attended many Memorial services for those lost.

I certainly hope that it does. I hope that people will realize how fragile life is and that they set their priorities in order and not waste their time here on earth. In doing this they will realize that materialistc things aren't what's important and that their personal relationships with their families, friends and community should always come first. In doing this it creates a stronger bond ... a bond that no enemy could ever break.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

From a very personal point of view, my 24th birthday. Above all, an extraordinary and incredible event, the kind of thing you cannot believe even when you see television pictures.

How have you been affected?

First I was afraid, because I had friends in NY. Then I was shocked by this action, by the pictures of death and despair. At my office, we all decided to go home early because we were not able to work any more, everybody kept thinking about the attack.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I don't know if it will really change the humanity's future, I don't know if wars change people. But it will undoubtedly question international relations and the foreign policy of the United States. It points out the weakness of a state, even the USA, and it proves that democracy is not a universal value and should always be defended.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

Obtuseness, Horror, Demoniac acts.

How have you been affected?

Deep emotional shock. I felt like loosing my own life or parents. The world is sick and fanaticism is a hidden virus that no one can heal, prevention is not enough when madness is stronger than any medications. Fanatic terrorists, do they still have a soul than can be saved? Fanaticism is the weakness proof of power.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

I don't think that anything will change, the World from its beginning has always been fighting for religious matters, for jealousy, for power. People have changed, modernity has come, but mentalities no. Terrorism must be stopped for sure with all countries working together for the same aim. But for sure not a fight against Arabic or Muslim people. I don't think that Humanity will change, just have a look of what's still happening in Israel & Palestine, Ireland, Spain for example. Suspicious and denunciations are back. Worth it? Peace does not bring power or money to countries. It's just a hiding face to cover the fragility of Humanity resume in two words: Good versus Bad.

What represents the September 11th event for you?

The poverty and the greatness of humanity.

Poverty as no ideology, no belief could justify the death of one human even less thousand of humans. Greatness regarding the reaction of firefighters, families, and volunteers. We can despite everything believe in the humanity

How have you been affected?

Humanely and deeply.

Do you think it will change the future of mankind and how?

No as I believe that human will prevent the craziness of terrorists as well as governments, which provokes this type of situation in their spirit of " Going in war ".
